When a new player joins a team, it is not only an increase in numbers but also the arrival of new culture, energy, and potential. To ensure a healthy process, it is crucial to take planned and inclusive steps from the very first day.

1. Welcome and Introduction

The first day is a turning point. Being welcomed by the coach and team captain, and introduced to other teammates, creates trust and warmth. Even a simple “welcome ceremony” can strengthen the sense of belonging.

2. Clarifying Roles and Expectations

Every player’s role and responsibilities in the team should be clearly explained. Sharing the new player’s role, training routines, and team goals removes uncertainty.

3. Mentor / Buddy System

Assigning an experienced teammate as a “buddy” speeds up adaptation. This player can explain team rules, rituals, and communication style, building a safe bridge for the newcomer.

4. The Power of Art and Sport

As highlighted in the Joy project (Work Package 2 and 4), combining art and sport is a strong tool for belonging. Activities like drawing, drama, or storytelling help the new player express themselves and connect with the team faster.

5. Open Communication and Feedback

Coaches should regularly ask the new player “How are you feeling?”. Early check-ins prevent problems and build trust within the team.

  • Players form a circle. The one holding the ball says their name + something they like.
  • The ball goes around until everyone has participated.

2. Mirror Exercise 🪞

  • Players work in pairs. One makes a movement (stretch, jump, raise arms), the other copies it like a mirror.
  • Then roles switch.
    👉 Goal: Improve empathy, attention, and playful interaction.

3. Team Canvas 🎨

  • Provide a large sheet of paper. Each player adds a symbol, shape, or drawing.
  • The final artwork becomes a shared symbol of team belonging.
    👉 Goal: Strengthen team spirit and visualize the new player’s contribution.
